In brief

A single online focus group in India costs about ₹47,000 to ₹96,000 when every cost line is bought. An in-person group in a Tier-1 city costs about ₹80,000 to ₹1.55 lakh (₹1,55,000).

IMARC Group, a market research and consulting firm, prints a total of ₹20,000 to ₹45,000 for an online focus group in its 2026 India cost estimates. Add up the six cost lines printed above that total and you get ₹47,000 to ₹96,000, more than double at both ends. That gap is the real answer to what a focus group costs. A focus group is a moderated discussion of 1 to 3 hours in which a recruited group shares views on a product, concept or service. Much of what you pay for sits around the discussion, not in it: finding the right people, paying them, moderating, translating, transcribing and analysing. Below you get a planning range, a worked budget for four online groups, and an eight-line checker you can run on any quote. We publish this page and recruit participants for focus groups in India, so run the checker on our quote too.

What’s in the price

ItemCost
Online₹47,000 to ₹96,000
In-person, Tier-1 city₹80,000 to ₹1,55,000
In-person, Tier-2 city (the next band of cities)₹59,000 to ₹1,20,000
Rural or in-home₹50,000 to ₹1,06,000

Key takeaways

  • Plan on about ₹47,000 to ₹96,000 for one online focus group and about ₹80,000 to ₹1.55 lakh (a lakh is ₹1,00,000) for one Tier-1 in-person group once every cost line is priced. These are our sums, and the range is indicative.
  • A headline total means little until you add the lines under it. If the lines do not sum to the total, ask which line is missing.
  • Four online groups of six completed participants come to ₹1.80 to ₹4.44 lakh before recruiter fees and tax, or ₹7,500 to ₹18,500 per completed participant (our model).
  • Ask for eight lines in every quote: recruitment, incentives, moderation, platform or venue, translation, recording, analysis and project costs.

How much does a focus group cost in India?

The Tier-1 city is the largest metropolitan cities. These are our sums of the line items in IMARC Group's 2026 cost estimates, which are one vendor's indicative figures. Treat them as a planning range, not a price.

How we summed: we added the low ends of the six lines (facility or platform, moderator, recruitment and incentives, translation, recording and transcription, analysis and reporting) and, separately, the high ends. IMARC Group labels its own figures "indicative cost only". Our own participant incentive range (₹1,000 to ₹5,000 per session, as of 7 October 2026) feeds the worked budget below, which tests the recruitment and incentive line.

Why do published focus group cost figures in India disagree?

In three of the four formats, and at the rural high end, the totals do not reconcile with the lines beneath them, and different quotes bundle different lines under the word "focus group". Here is the online column of IMARC's table:

The same guide prices a project of 4 to 6 groups across 2 to 3 cities at ₹2 to ₹5 lakh, and 8 to 12 groups nationwide at ₹5 to ₹12 lakh. Dividing gives a range per group: ₹2 lakh ÷ 6 and ₹5 lakh ÷ 4 give about ₹33,000 to ₹1,25,000. ₹5 lakh ÷ 12 and ₹12 lakh ÷ 8 give about ₹42,000 to ₹1,50,000. That range sits above the printed online totals and close to our sums, which suggests the printed totals leave lines out.

A single "per group" figure only holds if you know which lines it leaves out. A quote that says "qualitative study, four groups" next to one number cannot be compared with another. We say so in our guide to choosing a qualitative research agency.

What changes the price of a focus group?

Five things move a focus group quote most: how hard the participants are to recruit, the incentive, the number of sessions and languages, the format, and how much analysis you want.

  • Recruitment difficulty. Broad urban consumers are quick to find. Narrow profiles need more screening, and screening is where replacements come from.
  • Incentives. We pay participants up to ₹5,000 per session for a focus group, with ₹2,500 per participant as our working baseline. The exact amount is set per study. See what to pay focus group participants in India.
  • Sessions and languages. Each added group repeats the moderator, translation, recording and analysis lines.
  • Format. Online groups remove venue and participant travel costs. They do not remove recruiting, moderation, incentives, technical support, consent, transcription, translation, analysis or replacement recruits. For online research in India, an incentive may also need to cover data packages. Our comparison of online and in-person focus groups goes deeper.
  • Analysis depth. In the online column above, analysis and reporting is the largest single line at both the low and high end.

Your own team's time is a cost too. Nielsen Norman Group's costing of a focus group project (1998, US figures) added observers' time at a loaded hourly rate (salary plus overheads per hour), even though no invoice shows it. If you already have willing participants and a trained moderator, you can drop the recruitment and moderator lines. We would still budget for the incentive, consent and recording.

What does a worked focus group budget look like?

Four online focus groups with six completed participants each come to ₹1,80,000 to ₹4,44,000 before recruiter fees and tax, or ₹7,500 to ₹18,500 per completed participant. This is our model, not an official figure, and it uses the ranges in the table above.

Inputs and assumptions

  • 4 online groups in 2 cities, 6 completed participants per group, 24 in all.
  • Lines other than recruitment and incentives, per group: platform ₹3,000 to ₹8,000, moderator ₹12,000 to ₹25,000, translation ₹5,000 to ₹10,000, recording ₹4,000 to ₹8,000, analysis ₹15,000 to ₹30,000. These sum to ₹39,000 to ₹81,000.
  • Incentives per group: 6 × ₹1,000 = ₹6,000 (the low end of our ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 planning range), 6 × ₹2,500 = ₹15,000 (our working baseline), and 6 × ₹5,000 = ₹30,000 (the top of our range).
  • Recruiter fee left out until you have a quote.

Result

  • Per group: ₹39,000 + ₹6,000 = ₹45,000 at the low end. ₹81,000 + ₹15,000 = ₹96,000 at our baseline. ₹81,000 + ₹30,000 = ₹1,11,000 at the top incentive.
  • Four groups: 4 × ₹45,000 = ₹1,80,000. 4 × ₹96,000 = ₹3,84,000 at our baseline. 4 × ₹1,11,000 = ₹4,44,000 at the top incentive.
  • Per completed participant: ₹1,80,000 ÷ 24 = ₹7,500. ₹3,84,000 ÷ 24 = ₹16,000 at our baseline. ₹4,44,000 ÷ 24 = ₹18,500 at the top incentive.

What these figures include. The per-group figures cover platform, moderator, translation, recording, analysis and incentives. They exclude recruiter fees, project management, travel and tax. That is why ₹45,000 sits below the ₹47,000 floor of the planning range above, which counts recruitment and incentives as a single line (₹8,000 at the low end), not incentives alone.

Over-recruiting. Assume 4 in 5 recruits attend (our assumption). Then 6 ÷ 0.8 = 7.5, so book 8 per group, 32 recruits for 24 seats. Our inference: no-shows are unpaid, but any extra recruits who attend and complete are paid, so budget 2 extra incentives per group (₹2,000 to ₹5,000 at ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 each) if all 8 attend. See over recruitment.

One more check: the guide's incentive and recruitment line for an online group tops out at ₹15,000. Six participants at our ₹2,500 baseline already reach that figure before any recruiter fee. Expect the recruitment line in a real quote to sit above the guide's.

How do you check a focus group quote line by line?

Check a focus group quote by finding eight lines in it, running one pass-or-fail test on each, then adding the lines to see whether they match the headline.

Does the quote price recruitment and replacements?

Pass: it gives a fee per qualified complete (a recruit who passes screening and finishes the session), and says what happens when a recruit fails screening or does not attend. Fail: one figure labelled "recruitment".

Does the quote state the participant incentive?

Pass: it states the amount per participant × completed participants. Fail: the incentive is buried in another line.

Does the quote say how many moderators and sessions?

Pass: the number of moderators and sessions is stated. Fail: "moderation included" with no count.

Does the quote name the venue or online platform?

Pass: it is named, with technical support stated for online groups. Fail: missing, or "TBC".

Does the quote cover interpretation and translation?

Pass: the languages and who does the work are stated. Fail: silent on language.

Does the quote specify recording and transcription?

Pass: formats and transcript language are stated. Fail: "recordings" only.

Does the quote name the analysis and report?

Pass: the deliverable is named and revision rounds are stated. Fail: "findings" with no format.

Does the quote show project management, travel and tax?

Pass: each is stated, with tax shown separately. Fail: a single "other" figure.

Then run the sum test. Add lines 1 to 8. If the total differs from the headline by more than rounding, ask which line is missing. Fill the lines for your own brief and compare two quotes side by side. Our market research brief template gives every agency the same brief to price. Our recruitment cost worksheet breaks the recruitment, incentive, screening and replacement lines into formulas.

How do you get a fair focus group quote from Qualfacto?

You get a fair quote by sending us one brief and asking for the eight lines. We do not work from a fixed rate card. We review your brief for feasibility, then send a tailored proposal and quote. Pricing depends on the research methodology, target audience, participant profile, sample requirements, usership, geography, recruitment complexity and overall scope.

What we can do on a focus group:

  • Run groups of 1 to 3 hours, online or in person.
  • Recruit by city and verify participant identity before invitation.
  • Target by household and demographic profile.
  • Run sessions in languages other than English.
  • Agree deliverables before the study begins. Depending on scope these include recordings, transcripts, structured data exports and research reports, and they are listed in the quote.
  • Offer a free pilot before you commit to a full project.

What we pay participants sits inside the quote, so it helps to know it:

Send your brief to support@qualfacto.io and ask for the eight lines priced separately. We aim to reply within one business day (Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 18:00 Indian Standard Time); detailed briefs may take longer.

Frequently asked

A focus group is cost effective when your decision depends on people reacting to one another's views, such as testing messages, concepts or onboarding flows. It is poor value when you need private, individual accounts. Judge value by cost per completed participant: in our worked example of four online groups it is about ₹7,500 to ₹18,500 per completed participant, before recruiter fees and tax, depending on the incentive.
Add eight lines (recruitment, incentives, moderation, venue or platform, translation, recording, analysis, project costs) and compare the total with the quoted headline. If the two differ by more than rounding, ask which line is missing. Our recruitment cost worksheet gives the formulas for the recruitment, incentive, screening and replacement lines.
On our panel, a focus group participant is paid up to ₹5,000 per session, with ₹2,500 per participant as our working baseline. Amount, payment method and timing are set per study and shared before participation, and incentives are earned only after participation requirements are completed and validated.
Yes, we offer a free pilot before you commit to a full project. After we review your brief for feasibility, we send a tailored proposal and quote, and scope, deliverables and timelines are agreed before recruitment begins. Participants are screened and identity-checked before invitation, and sessions can run in languages other than English.
